Saw this on yahoo answers, why the colour red is considered lucky by chinese and is usually worn on CNY.

According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nien (Chinese: 年; pinyin: nián). Nien would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nien ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nien was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nien was afraid of the colour red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nien. From then on, Nien never came to the village again. The Nien was eventually captured by hong jun lao zu, an ancient Taoist monk. The Nien became hong jun lao zu's mount.

Chinese New Year festival in Chinatown, BostonClothing mainly featuring the colour red is commonly worn throughout the Chinese New Year because it is believed that red will scare away evil spirits and bad fortune. In addition, people typically wear new clothes from head to toe to symbolize a new beginning in the new year. Wearing new clothes also symbolizes having more than enough things to use and wear in the new year.

Symbolism

During these 15 days of the Chinese New Year one will see superstitious or traditional cultural beliefs with meanings which can be puzzling in the eyes of those who do not celebrate this occasion. There is a customary reason that explains why everything, not just limited to decorations, are centered on the colour red. At times, gold is the accompanying colour for reasons that are already obvious. One best and common example is the red diamond-shaped posters with the character 福 (pinyin: fú), or "auspiciousness" which are displayed around the house and on doors. This sign is usually seen hanging upside down, since the Chinese word 倒 (pinyin: dào), or "upside down", sounds the same as 到 (pinyin: dào), or "arrive". Therefore, it symbolizes the arrival of luck, happiness, and prosperity.

Red is the predominant colour used in New Year celebrations. Red is the emblem of joy, and this colour also symbolizes virtue, truth and sincerity. On the Chinese opera stage, a painted red face usually denotes a sacred or loyal personage and sometimes a great emperor. Candies, cakes, decorations and many things associated with the New Year and its ceremonies are coloured red. The sound of the Chinese word for “red” ( 紅) is “hong” which also means “prosperous.” Therefore, red is an auspicious colour and has an auspicious sound.

Now,most intriguing is that the following explanation was given by a singaporean indian married to a chinese wife

*thumbs up* ;D

OK LONG POST AHEAD :D

22nd Jan 10,

Went for Night Cycling xD

It was like my section's first ever overnight activity together so everyone went cept the sergeants(who we didn't bother to invite cos we dun wanna) and chub who was busy with his ORD course (bleh)

So in total 8 of us went,Ben,Nic,Gl,Zh,Vis,Dar,Al,and I.

Lets see, most of us met at bukit gombak mrt station where we met Nic,who was driving all 8 of us to ECP(he's got an eight seater car *__*)

For once I was actually the first one to arrive LOL! how rare is tt man!(and I actually thought I was late lol!) followed by Vis,than ZH,then Dar and GL,and finally around 8.20pm Nic drove there with Ben.

Nic's car is like super comfy *__* but too bad its too ex to maintain petrol-wise,and due to his crazy speeding the comfy ride wasn't as comfy as it coulda been.

Picked Al up at doby on the way.

The shop closes at 9pm and given the lack of time we had to rush hence we had nic speeding through the roads at 155km/hr LOL

Wasn't as scary as most of them claimed, guess I don't have any fear of speeds for cars(strangely thought its a diff case for taxis, the moment they start driving at even 60+km/hr I get all jelly legs wth =_=)

We reached at ECP at exactly 9pm and luckily found exactly one available parking slot in the carpark(talk about lucky!)

But the shop was still open so we somewhat made it on time, but thanks to us the shop was opened till 10pm( LOL)

I was alittle nervous at first cos I hadn't rode a bike for like...years.God,I don't even remember the last time I rode a bike before that night.

But old skills never truly fade away and much to my joy,I could still ride a bike.YAY! =D

So we all bought a bottle of mineral water each and hooked to our bikes, and started off at 10pm.

So the route we went through the night was starting from ECP,took a left all the way to bedok jetty where we made a U turn and rode to the other end of ECP,and from there,it was off to the main road! goodbye bicycle track!

We started through the main roads at about 11.20 or so from ECP we drove down to I-forgot-which-community centre then we rode pass dunman high all the way to nicoll highway.

I think nicoll highway was quite fun, alittle bumpy but speeding at nicoll highway in a bike is super shiok man,oh the wind *__*

After exiting from nicoll highway we turn down to Singapore flyer where we had supper at "The Glutton".We combined cash to order a stingray, satay, oyster omelette( <3) and carrot cake.
Not bad, their carrot cake was really worth the $.Recommended.

From there we left off at around 12.30am and rode towards marina barrage but made a long pitstop at raffles city to head to Butterfactory Club, cos Nic wanted to meet a friend(dunno for wad =.=)

Boring 30mins wasted at butterfactory waiting for Nic.

Then Nic and Ben decided to go prawning at ECP instead of continuing cycling,We were like "wth, hello we didn't rent bikes to go prawning -.-" But in the end they insisted so we just let the two spoilers go ahead with their own plans. The rest of us were firm on cycling through the night so too bad =P

Then from butterfact,we rode all the way to marina barrage. That was possibly the longest distance we rode continuously without any breaks, man tiring but damn fun cos we rode through CTE.Since it was so late there were hardly any vehicles so we could speed all over the place and the downslopes were super awesome.Of cos we had to constantly look out for huge trucks that passed by every now and then.

The formation was pretty much a standard with Zh being our guide followed by either Me or Dar(we were constantly trying to overtake each other) followed by Vis being the center man and Al slowly taking his time, with Gl being the rear man.

Reached the top of Marina Barrage at around 2+am

one word to describe the place: BREATHTAKING.

Maybe not so breathtaking in the day,but given that hour the night sky from barrage was simply unbelievable.Light orange from the horizon turning into shades of dark blue and to midnight black at the center of the sky.Its definitely a romantic place *__*b hoho!~

Upon reaching the top,the whole lot of us just parked our bikes and laid down on the grass(which is well trimmed so no poking)and just stared at the sky for super damn long.

Zh fell asleep for like 40mins while the rest of us talked about random stuff.

Roughly around 3.15am we left marina barrage and cycled down to shenton way,and from there towards beach road(lavender side)

By then our butts were aching.Bad. T_T

Halfway towards beach road,Al and Gl got lost from the pack so we had to wait for them at lavender mrt station. They ended up taking a wrong turn after one of the junctions and had to cycle though a longer route as compared to the route the rest of us.

From lavender we cycled back to raffles place and nicoll highway and into ECP again(by then our butts were burning T__T'l|)

Reached ECP at 4.45am+ and we parked our bikes at one of the resting points. In a matter of seconds Zh,Vis and Dar got KOed from exhaustion while Al just sat and complained bout how unglam it was to sleep there (LOL) Gl just walk here walk there and I tried to Sleep in vain.Eventually Al got the rest to wake up and we cycled over to ECP macs around 5.30am.

Nic and Ben met us at Macs at around 6am+ where they showed us their haul for the night: two big packets of lobsters, and crabs(both mini sized ones of cos)

Eventually Gl took it home and ate it LOL

And that was our overnight cycling trip.

All of us agreed it was awesome and super fun, save for the butt aching that followed on for the next 2days. x_x

Random interesting stuff during the trip:-

- I cycled too fast to the point where my bottle of water fell off and I didn't notice until our first stop point T_T had to live on Dar's and Vis's water. Note to self: less speeding please.

- Butter factory being the most popular club in Sg was packed and full house, with over 60+ people still waiting at the entrance.Really wth,I think clubbing is a total waste of time,$$ and not a good influence in any single way.Only dumb people who want to feel high for a few hrs go there and splurge their money. My advice: Don't bother going clubbing even for a one time experience, its downright stupid =.=

- At Shenton way, We saw an old security officer sleeping inside a UOB office he was suppose to be watching over, and he was sleeping so obviously,I mean a whole stretch of glass wall and there he is happily snoozing LOL he didn't even wake up when we cycled past him and ring the bell LOL!!

- When cycling pass haji lane near lavender,Dar got scared by a mannequin that was staring at him from inside one of the stores.Oh the classic expression he gave LOL~

- ECP park area was full of dead people at 5am+,everyone there were just sleeping at random resting points. The mac area was funny cos nearly everyone inside mac were dead LOL and there was this guy who was sitting beside ronald macdonald outside macs and was lying his head on ronald macdonald's shoulders and sleepin LOL!

- When Nic was driving us back home we were on CTE( I think) and at one point there was a turning with the singapore flyer overlooking the expressway from the left.At that point with the morning sun up in the sky and Nic speeding at 150km/hr with the windscreen down,it was seriously awesome *thumbs up*

And that was My first ever overnight cycling trip =D

Ok I'll post more later during the day blehhhh =P

Singaporeans can be really kpo and unpleasant, and they don't even try to be discreet =.=

Was going for my final theory lesson at yck so its like only one station away from my place

So one of those who entered the train with me(and the huge crowd of people) was this young girl, from her behavior patterns, its a giveaway she's a down-syndrome child.

And no idea why but she started crying shortly after sitting down, now ok understand its rather sudden and to a certain extent, startling so naturally everyone turn and look at her.

Sounds normal right? No.

It was annoying how most of em were were showing annoyed facial expressions, shaking their heads can going "tch" or "tsk" every few secs or so.And the poor maid had to put up with all that unfriendliness and try to get the girl to calm down.

Its really idiotic, such behavior, like sheesh give the girl a break, its not like shes doing it purposely you know =_=

and then there were the kaypos who keep turning to look every 1-2 secs, like really I don't get whats so fascinating to scrutinize someone who just happens to be different.

Perhaps that's just the normal Sgian behavior. But if that's the case then it really sucks.

**************************************************************

Ok that aside! First final theory lesson, was like rather normal, can't wait to clear it so I can finally move on to the most exciting part;the practical lessons *_________* heh heh

Been spamming pyramid Pq in maple, its not exactly addictive as its very chaotic, but exp wise its craaaazy!

HMM lets see,and I've fallen victim to korean pop.I am now hooked to SNSD T_T

<3

lol!!

Ok I have decided to stop procrastinating and do things at the time and day I said I will,so I realize I pushed alot of my recent updates back,so it'll be up either tomorrow,or latest by friday =D ciao!
